Citizens Police Academy

Canton Police Department's Citizens Police Academy is a six-week program intended for individuals who are interested in acquiring insight and knowledge on how the police department works to serve the Canton community.  Note: The 2018 session will consist of eight weeks, and include 2 sessions of a cross-over Fire academy pilot program.

Mission of the Academy

Individuals attending the academy will be educated on policies and operational procedures of the department through presentations, demonstrations and hands-on activities.  They will increase their personal knowledge on law enforcement's role in the criminal justice system, as well as their understanding of the training and education required for police officers to effectively handle the daily challenges of police work.  The overall intent of the academy is to develop positive relationships between citizens and police officers, enhancing cooperation, understanding and general good will.

Academy Dates

The next session is scheduled to be held April 12 - May 31, 2018.  Applications will be accepted online or in person at the Police Department front desk during the month of February, 2018.

The application period has closed.

Applicants will be notified by the end of March, by mail, as to whether or not you have been accepted for the academy (class size is limited to 30 participants).   

Application Requirements

Below are a list of application requirements:
  • Canton resident
  • Age 21 or over
  • No felony convictions and no misdemeanor convictions within the past 3 years
  • Applicants are subject to a background check

Notification of Acceptance

Class size is limited.  All applicants will be notified by mail if they have been accepted or not.
